Show Outline

introduce Mike Rose : Tonight's co host is currently a blogger for The Unofficial Apple Web Log and the host of the TUAW Podcast here on Talkshoe every Sunday at 10 pm ET, right after this show. Welcome to the Show Mike

Interview Segment

Ask Mike about his background

  • As a Mac User? -- since 128K & ImageWriter, turned 'pro' at CMU in late 80s as desktop publishing began to make inroads into college newspapers.
  • At work? -- more than an decade in magazine business at Time Inc, Entertainment Weekly and LIFE, managing Mac deployments. Been able to watch the rise, fall and subsequent rise of the Mac platform along the way, a remarkable ride.
  • TUAW -- since 2006, general assignment with a bent for enterprise, administration, Apple finance stories

Ask Mike about TUAW

  • History of TUAW -- founded 2005, part of weblogs inc. network -- "most linked Apple blog"
  • TUAW is somewhere between a news site and a fan site -- writers who bring expertise but also enthusiasm
  • Coverage -- 'ownership' of the iPhone hacking story, some readers very excited, some less so
  • More variety than single-issue sites (macrumors, ifoapplestore, etc.) but still a full slate of coverage -- less inside-baseball than DaringFireball & Ars, usually
  • Similar audiences: Macworld, Macnn, Macobserver, macdailynews -- we tend to be a little opinionated.
  • What is TUAW doing in new Media -- weekly talkcasts, more screencasts, more video esp. Macworld -- first big video experiment was last year with Macworld, learned a lot. Sister sites Engadget and Download Squad, learn collaboratively about best video practices.
  • What can we can we expect in 2008 from TUAW -- more of the same, a renewed focus on Leopard and the growing Mac universe. 'Onboarding' of new/returning Mac users is a big challenge for the entire Mac-using community, we think we can help. As the Apple universe grows and changes -- most iPod/iPhone owners are not necessarily Mac users -- need to address their concerns too.

So what questions do you have for Mike about TUAW

Apple Talk "The year in review"

All that is and was iPhone. What will 2008 brings

  • Build up to the release
  • The release
  • Hacking and unlocking
  • The price drop heard round the world
  • Europe finally gets the the iPhone
  • What's next for our celluar friend the iPhone?

iWork 08 comes of age (the good the bad the iMovie 08).

  • We Finally got an Excel application.
  • We lost the iMovie timeline but what did we gain
  • iWeb and the Gallery if you are an dot mac member

The iPod finally touches down, waz up with the Phatties and what's the future of the iPod

  • The Ipod becomes a classic
  • We get to iTouch our iPods
  • That little guy is Phat

Aluminum is the new "HIP" iMac, keyboards, and more.

  • iMacs get a refresh
  • Macbooks and MBP gain power all the time

Apple TV, some say it's dead in the water, I say it's here to stay and grow. What say you Mike?

I would love to see the Mini and AppleTV merge into one product, esp now that Leopard has the AppleTV front row UI. 'Mac Nano' thin Mini would be a great TV connection, no need to hack to expand capabilities.

Apple Telivision Ads, will this Windows bashing (in fun) campaing every grow old

I find it pretty odd that some ads can call out Vista as something to run from, others can claim that MBP runs Vista well... weird.

All things NBC Universal, the day that "Heroes Died" (NBC , movie, media and TV Talk)

Video is going to become more 'podcasty' and iTunes is the biggest content aggregator for podcasts, full stop. NBC has great content and it's being firehosed out, but if iPods/iTunes are excluded from the party then the opinion leaders and 'leading cool' consumers are not going to see it, or are going to go BitTorrent for it. Miro, eyeTV.

Will we see Movie Rentals on iTunes soon?

Yep.

Macworld Talk

Mike's predictons (If you do that type of thing)

Subnotebook

AppleTV reboot (probably not integrated screen)

Storage bumps for iPhone/touch

Victor's Predictions

  • iPhoneiPod Touch SDK (Duh)
  • New MaPro's (yes)
  • New Cinema Displays (likely, with cameras finally)
  • 16 gig iPhone (probably)
  • New games for the iPhone via iTunes
  • A new Flat Screen 32" 42" TV with built in Apple TV (this is my long shot ) guess
  • One More thing: New 7" to 10" portable LT non multi-touch flash based HD $500 to $700 estimated price
