Getting ready to travel to Macworld and overall tips for traveling
- Making a list and checking it twice.
- What are your objectives and what do you need to meet them. Sure Macworld is going to be a blast, but for me this is a business trip for the show so I have to think about what my objective are personally and professionally.
- My first objective is always have fun
- Learn
- Bring back audio, video and post pictures that will be of value to my audience. This one requires me to bring a substantial amount of equipment to the show, so I'd like to tell you about that so you can see how I plan for that.
- Audio Equipment.
- Well during a show like this I would not normally need much more than my Zoon H2 portable recorder a good external Mic and a pair of head phones .However since I'm helping Adam Chistianson to do the technical set up and recording of the Podcasters Meet and Mingle on Thursday at Jilians, this list gets much longer.
- The Mackie 1220 will come and it wil be used as the main recording console . We are gong to have about 6 mics in total so it will be needed.
- The Tascam external recorder will come as I want to be able to record right from the board to this unit without having to rely on any computer technology. The Tascam lets me get clean flashed based recordings which will then be transfered to Adam's computer for editing or cleanup by him. Of course this will include at leat 6gigs in SD flash storage to record on to.
- Mics and cords. I will be bringing at least 3 michrophones and mic cords and Adam will provide and equal number an long extension cords
- various Audio cords and gear, batteries, . There is nothing in this world that is worse than needed a certain type of Audio cord for a big project on the road and not having it. So I will bring a generous.assortement of 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch, XLR , adaptors, cable ties, wire snitpits, flahlights, etc to tyr and out think Murphy.
- Video and Camera Equipment:I had a great experience at the Podcast and New Media Expo recording those video piece on the floor. They were very well recived and do date there has been over 70,000 downloads of those videos. So why not do the same thing at Macworld. I am about 97% certain that I will have a press pass for this event evenif thanks fo the good folks at IDG. I won't have one for the key note but I will on the show floor. Ths should provide me with Ample opportunity to record audio footage of products that I think you guys would find interested as well as putting a face to devleopers , mac celebreties and companies that we talk about all year long. I'm going to focus on the independent developers that provide us all with such productivity and entertainment and who don't get as much press at macworld. So what do I need to do this.
- The Canon HV 20 HD camera will be my work horse for this taslk
- I will have both a traditional ball tri-pod
- I will also be trying the QUICKPOD found over at http://www.quikpod.com This niffy device is a mono pod which acts as an extension of your hand so that you can take pictures or videos of yourself , extendit to get above the crowd or simply use it as a regular mono pod for still photograpy or video. The people at Quickpod sent me a review unit specifially to use a Macworld and I will do a full review sometime after macworld. I can give you a sneak peak right now because I've been using the quickpod with my Samsung NV11 point and shoot and I have to tell you I love it. So if it works as well with my heavier video camera, that should work out just fine.
- Tapes, I bought 4 of the more expensive HD DV tapes for the trip. That should provide about 4 hours of shooting time which should be more than enough for the quick 4 to 5 minute videos I plan to shoot. Even if use one of them to shoot the entire Podcaster meetup (which I might) that should be plenty.
- I will be using a hand held Sennheiser MD 46 interviewing mic http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=MD46 which list for about $170 US but provide excellent hand held quaility I also got a MIC Flag with the TMUP logo that rocks over at Impactpbs.com http://www.impactpbs.com/ These guys make custome made MIcflags that are used by all the major TV and Radio stations . They use top notch products and at $55 US it just rocks. I also hear that the Mic Flag makes you look cooler too. We will see|
In the area of Photography I'm going to keep it simple
- I really struggled with this. Do I the Nikon SLR and 2 lenses and have full flexability or do I keep it simple. Well I choose to keep it simple. I'll just bring the Samsung NV11 10 megapixel point and shoot that I got for Christmas. I may not look like the coolest cat when I go on the Photowalk with Thomas Hawk and Rober Scoble on Friday night but Ill have a 4 gig card lots of flexabilit in being able to shoot manually as well as on auto mode with the samsung and it has a very decent video camera which I plan to use for video when I want to be more incognito.
- Computer Stuff
- The Mabook Pro is coming along of course
- A USB Hub, misc usb cables
- The iPhone and iPod chargers
- A Power Strip
- Firewire cables to import video to the Mac
- An External HD with a full backup of the MacBook
Wireless coverage is king
Of all the computer hear I'm bringing none is likely to be as important or used as the devices that enable to have access to the internet whereever I am. . On of the biggest hassle of traveling is having enough coverage of your wireless network in your hotel room This will be specially true since Adam Chirstianson and I are rooming for Macworld and we are both bound to use alot of bandwith.
I have two solutions to this issue
EVVDO Sprint card:
Using the Sprint - the Novatel U720 USB modem (Rev. A) I'm able to get on the network almost any time. Yes at $60 a month this may seem steep but when you are on a trip like this the payoff will be incredible.
- Adam or I should be able to blog, Twitter or even UStream while in the car on the way to San Francisco
- Once there I'll have coverage everywhare in San Francisco as this CDMA technology is prevelant there
- If the Hotel Wi-Fi is not free I'll be able to save about 15 a day by using this device instaed o buying wi-Fi. That would pay for almost 3 monthis in coverage. The killer feature is to intergrate this device with my Airport Extreme
- The Airport Extreme is the perfect way to extend my network into the entire room in a few seconds. I can share out my internet connection by using the "Internet Sharing Feature" in the Sharing System preference Pane. I can then set a password fo access, have the Airport extreme connect to the EVDO network and then ADam or other guest that come by the room will be able to share my bandwith. The Airport extreme makes it easy to save travel confiurations for future use and it's light weight and easy form factor are grea to Travel with.
What other Macworld or traveling tips do you all have for me?
MacWorld Keynote and Annoucement Coverate
As I mentioned before I won't be inside the Keynote this time around at Macworld so in many ways that part of the show will be as much of a mistery to me as it will be to you.
I will be setting up shop at the It won't be ver hard to get your Keynote news in real time this year. I will be at the Starbucks next door to the Moscone Center by 8AM if anyone wants to join me for some live coverage. I hope to be able to use Ustream and perhaps even an imprompt to Talkshoe live call right before the annoucement.
However I also wanted to cover just some of the my picks for choices to keep up with the Keynote. For the last two keynotes I have also particiapted in a chat room that Adam Christianson set up on iChat and I will be there as well this time.
Macworld Predictions: I made my predictions all the way back on Dec 9th when I had Veronica Belmont from Mahalo daily on here. She thought I was nuts. So lets review those and then get yours as a way to close the show.
Victor’s Wild Macworld Predictions
* iPhoneiPod Touch SDK (Duh)
* New MaPro’s , well I ahead of my time. We saw new 8 core MacPros last week which to me can only mean that they did not want to take focus away from this annoucement as there are more goodies on the way.
* New Cinema Displays (likely, with cameras finally)
* 16 gig iPhone (probably)
* New games for the iPhone via iTunes
* A new Flat Screen 32″ 42″ TV with built in Apple TV (this is my long shot ) guess
* One More thing: New 7″ to 10″ portable LT non multi-touch flash based HD $500 to $700 estimated price
